BOOK II: NIGHTWORLD
NEW YORK CITY, FALL 1928- As rivals in the black underworld begin issuing threats, Mad Charlie ponders both his violent past down South and his future in his chosen home, Harlem, all while hosting the hottest after-hours in town alongside singer and nightlife queen Rita Collins. Meanwhile in the same neighborhood, hard-partying gunman Pinky Horwitz makes fast friends with front page celebrity Irish gangster Rex Dugan, who is also uptown on a clubbing excursion. With common habits, outlooks and friends, the two bond on an all-night tour of seedy revelry as the feared and wealthy Dugan puts new ideas in the younger hoodlum’s head, some that could end up landing him in the morgue. Back in the Lower East Side, at the urging of a garment union elder, put-upon young labor activist Yetta Rubin begins hatching plans against Pinky’s crew, the Goldman Gang.
